Russian women like Russian men. If they could, they would prefer to marry a Russian man. Of course, a Russian woman is looking for a good husband, and many Russian men often do not make good husbands.

Russian society is very chauvinistic. Women usually do the housework and take care of the children. Because of economics, they usually have a job as well.

From a cultural standpoint, drinking is socially acceptable and many Russian men drink to excess, which can also affect their health. Many Russian men are like the old cartoon character of Andy Capp.

Some are lazy, alcoholic bums who let their wives do all the housework, plus bring home a paycheck, while they go out with their friends and drink and chase women. If their wives object, they give them a swat, and if they object too much, they leave.

Because of all the single and available women, Russian men are spoiled. Many women feel lucky to have a husband even if he is like the type just described.

After the age of thirty-five, it is virtually impossible for a Russian woman to find a husband. If they are divorced and have children, the same situation applies.

Many Russian women believe that Westerners make better husbands. Right or wrong, they believe that Westerners are more liberated than Russian men and will pitch in with more of the household tasks.

Many Russian women are attracted to American men because they are better groomed and wear cleaner clothes than Russian men. American men are more polite and genteel than Russian men. Many Russians appear impolite to Americans.

They don’t say please or thank you very often. The older generation of Russians has table manners that Americans are not used to. During the Communist years, manners were considered bourgeois and they fell out of favor.

Because of the death of so many men in the Stalinist purges and World War II, many Russian men were raised without a father. Many of them do not know how to function as a father and are minimally involved with raising their children.

Many Russian women believe that they will have more economic opportunity for themselves and for their children in Western countries than in Russia.

All the women in the world are looking for economic security. Why should Russian women be any different?
America is a nation of immigrants. Virtually all of the people who have immigrated to America were looking for a better life. They operated out of what Adam Smith called ‘enlightened self-interest.’ Russian women are no different.

This has been the reality of immigration to America from the very beginning. The Spanish traveled to the New World to find ‘the fountain of youth.’ The English followed them to the New World to find the ‘streets paved with gold.’

The Irish left the Potato Famine behind for the chance of a new opportunity in America only to experience the Coffin Ships, cholera outbreaks, and signs stating ‘Irish need not apply.’

Prejudice against immigrants, including Russian women, is nothing new. They just happen to be the newest group of immigrants that are viewed with prejudice.

Scammers are dangerous, because you can waste very much time and money on them and at the end be back where you started.

I must admit there are a lot of Russian dating scammers on dating sites.

But don’t get upset about it. Imagine you are a gold-digger on Alaska. You sift rock in order to find a piece of gold. I think it is even interesting to be a gold-digger. Ivano-Frankivsk lies in the Precarpathian plain where fast waters of the Nadvirnianska Bystrytsia and Solotvynska Bystrytsia join together. Ivano-Frankivsk is the regional center and one of the largest economic and cultural centers in the west of Ukraine.

The first mention of the city named Stanyslaviv refers to 1662 when the city received a Magdeburg right. The city was founded as a fortress to protect people from Crimean Tatars’ raids and a stronghold of the Pototskyis – Polish landlords on Halych lands. Many times the fortress was besieged by Turkish and Russian troops.

Stanyslaviv was originated from the Market square and City Hall, which can be seen today having been modified. The Renaissance architectural ideas of “the ideal city” were reflected in the construction that followed. These ideas were used for planning a middle part of the city, its streets and churches. Because of the originality the of architecture sometimes our city is called “small Lvov”.

In 18-19 centuries the city was a big trading and manufacturing center of Poland and from 1772 – of Austria (since 1867 – of Austro-Hungarian Empire). Except Ukrainians, a certain contribution in development of crafts and culture was made by Polish, Jews and Armenians whose national communities were quite numerous.

In 1848 the revolution woke public life. In Stanislav there was created “Rus Rada” (alongside with Polish). They organized a squadron of National Guards and started printing the first newspaper. Ukrainian deputies were elected to the newly established Parliament.

The second half of the 19th century is marked by fast development of industrial relations and creating enterprises. The railway built in 1866 made some impact, too. At that time the locomotive repair factory, distillery, leather plant “Plai” were established.

In 1884 a prominent public character and writer N. Kobrynska conducted constituent assembly of the “Rus Woman Society” (later called “Ukrainian Woman Society”). This initiated the organized woman movement in Ukraine.

During the World War in 1915-1916 there were cruel battles over the city. Part of historic buildings was destroyed and then restored in new architectural forms.

In 1918 after break-up of Austro-Hungarian Empire there was created the West Ukrainian People’s Republic.

Stanyslaviv was the capital of the Republic in January-May 1919. Such prominent public figures as M. Hrushevskyi, V. Vynnychenko, S. Petliura, Y. Konovalets used to come here at that time.

During the World War II the city was occupied by fascist troops for three years (1941-1944). The underground representatives of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists – Ukrainian Insurgent Army were in charge of the struggle with occupants. The hearts of people are still aching when they recall the public execution of 27 patriots in the center of the city in November 1943. In Stanyslaviv and its suburbs fascists killed more than 100 thousand peaceful people in total the city in November 1943. Asking my Russian girlfriend’s father if I can marry her?

My girlfriend and her family is from Russia. They have been living here in America for about 19-20 years (my girlfriend just turned 27). Anyway, it is sort of an American custom to ask the girl’s father for permission to ask her to marry you. My girlfriend and I have talked about getting married and have even been looking for rings. Do Russians have a similiar custom about asking the mother or father for permission to marry their daughter?
She still lives with them, if that matters and I get along with them really well.

Tradition (from any culture) aside, why don’t you ask your girlfriend how she would feel about you doing that? I personally wouldn’t like it if my boyfriend asked anybody but me if he could marry me, and I know several Russian women who feel the same way. That said, I also know plenty of women who would think that what you’d like to do is very romantic. Before you do this, I think you should talk to her about it. She may also have some advice on the best time/place/way to ask (even within a culture, people’s specific families can be different).

Sorry if you’ve already done that, in that case this is probably not the best advice. Whatever you end up doing, congrats to both of you!

Privacy and your Russian Wife

Lynn Visson explains in her book, ‘Wedded Strangers’:

“Americans cannot understand when their wives or their family reads their mail or listens to their telephone conversations. Russians have absolutely no respect for privacy. The Russian language does not even have a word for privacy.”

I can’t tell you how disconcerting it was for me to find that my wife had found and read letters I had sent to other women. Not that there were any smoking guns or anything I was particularly ashamed of in those letters. It was more the idea that she had violated my privacy.

She has no idea what the word privacy means. The letters weren’t sitting around, waiting to be read. They were filed away. My wife felt the need to investigate her new home. Trust me, when you get married your home becomes her home and she feels entitled to go anywhere in it.

Not only was she not embarrassed about violating my privacy, she felt compelled to discuss the content of my letters with me. She would also open written correspondence addressed to me through the post office. She was reading my mail.

My feeling is that if you read correspondence that is not addressed to you, then you are responsible for dealing with any uncomfortable feelings that come up from reading it.

My feeling was that if you want to open my bills, then you can just go ahead and pay them.

There Is No Russian Word For ‘Privacy’:

Again, I didn’t have anything to hide. I was just shocked. I never had anyone open my mail before. This became a source of disagreement between us.

My wife claimed she was just trying to ‘understand American life.’ I accused her of being a budding KGB agent and ‘checking up on me.’

If wasn’t just my wife. Her Russian girlfriend would come over to our house, use my computer to get on the Internet, and would then read my personal correspondence.

Her girlfriend would feel free to discuss the content of my letters with my wife.

If you think this is an isolated case, I assure you it is not. If you think that this will never happen to you, you are wrong. If you think that you are going to be able to discuss this rationally with your wife, you are mistaken. The only thing you can do is take precautions beforehand.

I don’t even think it is just Russian women. I have many acquaintenances who are married to American women and many of them do the same thing.

One American woman divorced her husband because she ‘discovered’ that her husband was looking at porn on the home computer. Apparently she found a list of the websites he had visited. It wasn’t anything that the FBI was going to put him in jail for, but he ended up divorced just the same.

Personally, I’m not rationalizing his behavior. He probably isn’t the best human being in the world or the worst. However, there are lessons to be learned here.

It’s probably best to stay away from personal vices on the home front. Of course, if you can’t enjoy yourself in the privacy of your own home, where can you enjoy yourself?

I am a bridesmaid and the bride and groom have asked me to give a toast to the Groomsmen. Any ideas?

I know a lot of people have never heard of a bridesmaid giving a toast to the groomsmen, but this is what I was asked to do. I would like it to be very funny because I know all the groomsmen very well. Unfortunately, I can not make the usual joke about hooking up with a bridesmaid because they all are either married or dating. The wedding is next weekend and I need help. Thank you for your help!

Well, if you know them all well enough maybe you can think of a funny story from the past to relate to the crowd of people. Or maybe you can say something funny about them organizing the bachelor party for the groom. You can say “thanks” to the groomsmen for getting the groom drunk or mention something funny they did to the groom. Maybe something funny happened throughout the planning process – I am not really sure. I wish that I could give better advice, but that’s really the only thing that I can think of.
