Peace Appeal for Kenya
Peace Appeal: Uniting Against the Violence in Kenya
3rd January, 2008
Preamble:
We peace lovers around the globe, believing strongly in the notion of all humanity being one undivided and indivisible family, with each of us being responsible for the misdeeds of all the others;
Aware of the high tensions in the aftermath of post- election violence in Kenya;
Concerned with sympathy that the post election violence has claimed lives of more than 300 innocent people to this date, including over 30 people who were burnt to death in a church where they had taken shelter.
Affirming that it is unacceptable for human lives and their properties to be carelessly lost;
Confident that it not too late for the warring parties to do their utmost to reach a solution to the benefit of the Kenyan people;
We do hereby appeal to:-
1. Kenyan leaders and elders, Mwai Kibaki and Odinga to first prioritize that the violence and mayhem in Kenya is brought to an end.
2. Support an urgent need to establish a process of reconciliation in Kenya between Mr. Kibaki and Mr. Odinga, facilitated by the African Union
3. Commit Archbishop Desmond Tutu and other celebrated freedom and peace activists to continuously commit the warring parties to opt for peace till calm returns in Kenya;
4. A neutral body under the AU auspices, with local, regional and international observers and press, that an impartial investigation into the accuracy of the presidential results is conducted expeditiously;
5. Kenyan police to refrain from the use of excessive force including though not limited to firing live bullets onto civilians;
6. Local, regional and international print, online, audio and visual media houses, to maintain professional coverage of the unfolding in Kenya the most possible ingenuous manner;
7. All Humanitarian agencies to expeditiously come to the rescue of the internally displaced people in Kenya and refugees;
8. UN, EU and their agencies together with other development partners to pressurize the Kenyan leadership to do their utmost to restore calm into country;
9. Kenya protestors to refrain from engaging into outlawed acts of terror and crimes against property, including though not limited to acts of looting.
Kenya is one of the African countries where this shouldn’t be happening.
Like Martin Luther King Jr, stated; “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere…, whatever affects one directly, affects us all indirectly”. Edmund Burke likewise remarked that; “all that is needed for the triumph of evil is that good men (and women) do nothing”. I challenge all of us to stand up for peace in Kenya. You can support this appeal, by endorsing it with your name and sharing it out with others in all possible ways.
Sharing our heart felt sympathy,
