I would read the other persons profile carefully and pick some items of common interest from their profile.
What has worked for me has been 3 or 4 emails back and forward beetween each other then perhaps instant chat if your site offers that. If after that you are still intrested then offer a date at a neutral location e.g a meal and take it from there!

I think internet dating is a great way to meet people and make friends, i signed up with the friends reunited site and took me 6 months and a lot of whispers and emails but i have now met the best person in the world and am now in a strong relationship.
