Marriage Advice:
how much will cost if I want to have my wedding in china?
Do the groom’s family pay everything? How much do the groom pay to the bride’s family as the blessing’ gift?
I gather you’re asking about Chinese traditions:
* Like it is elsewhere, the cost of a wedding will vary depending on size and location. For the normally large weddings, it might be $10k-$15k US dollars in large city but much lower in less expensive areas.
* Traditionally the groom’s family pays for the wedding, including the reception. Sometimes the bride’s family will host a smaller reception. Nowadays, like it is elsewhere, the bride and the groom tend to pay for the wedding themselves. (My friend and her fiance did with their wedding that I helped plan/coordinate)
* The groom’s family also provides the Betrothal Gifts to the bride’s family including lucky money in an amount with 8s or 9s in it. Also jewelry. The two families should discuss all this and agree beforehand. And if the groom’s family is going all out with gifts, don’t forget the other items including the dragon-phoenix cakes, liquor, fruit, tea. Maybe a roasted pig if you’re Cantonese. (In my friend’s case, her family wasn’t interested in gifts, definitely not pork products! The bride got plenty of lucky money during the tea ceremony but that was for both her and the groom. And she got jewlery too)
* The bride’s family does provide the Dowry, most importantly the tea set that will be used for the tea ceremony (also 24k jewelry, linens, etc) and they would return some of the lucky money from the betrothal gift. (In my friends case, the groom’s family didn’t care about all this but she did buy new linens and bought a treadmill for her groom)
* The bride and groom does visit the brides family a few days after they’re married and bring gifts (more roasted pig!) but again, ask the families what you should bring.
All this varies with the region and family customs. This is all rather old-fashioned and so many brides/grooms and the family skip all this gift giving even though it’s suppose to build relationships/respect between families. Check with both families first to see what they expect. Good luck!
